Demystifying Online Therapy: A Psychotherapist’s Insights

In today’s digital world, online therapy has gained significant popularity as a convenient option for those seeking mental health support. Whether you’re an expat or simply prefer the flexibility of online communications, you may be wondering if it is a legitimate and effective solution. As a psychotherapist with a 25-year career, I can assure you that it is indeed legitimate and can effectively address your mental health needs.

Why Choose Online Therapy?

In an ever-evolving digital world, online therapy has emerged as a compelling choice for individuals seeking mental health support. With its unique advantages, it offers the flexibility and convenience to access therapy from the comfort of your own home. But what exactly is it, and does it hold up as a legitimate option for those seeking effective mental health support?

Having spent over 20 years meeting patients in person and the last 3 years exclusively practicing online, I can confidently affirm that the therapeutic alliance between myself and my patients is just as impactful as it would be in a traditional in-person setting. This firsthand experience unequivocally confirms that it is not only a legitimate option but an effective one. It works!

Proven Effectiveness

Extensive research has consistently demonstrated the effectiveness of online therapy in delivering positive outcomes for individuals seeking mental health support. Notably, a study published in the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Journal discovered that it is just as effective as in-person therapy for treating depression. Remarkably, it also revealed a higher completion rate, indicating that patients were more likely to remain engaged in their treatment.

In addition to this study, a comprehensive review published in the Journal of Technology in Human Services examined multiple research studies on the efficacy of online therapy. The findings conclusively supported its effectiveness in addressing various mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), comparable to traditional face-to-face therapy.

Furthermore, a recent meta-analysis encompassing 64 studies published in the Journal of Anxiety Disorders in 2018 affirmed the effectiveness of virtual cognitive behavioral therapy for major depression, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and general anxiety disorder.

These compelling findings solidify online therapy as a legitimate and proven option for individuals seeking mental health support. Beyond its effectiveness, it offers significant advantages such as enhanced accessibility, privacy, and convenience.

What is Online Therapy?

Online therapy, also known as e-therapy or virtual therapy, is a modern approach to mental health counseling that takes place over the Internet. It utilizes various communication methods such as video conferencing, phone calls, messaging, and email to facilitate therapeutic sessions between the therapist and the client.

While virtual therapy offers flexibility, it is essential to note that I personally advocate for video meetings as the preferred mode of communication. Visual cues and non-verbal expressions play a vital role in effective therapy, and seeing each other allows for a more comprehensive understanding and connection. In my professional opinion, therapists who solely rely on methods like SMS, email, or phone treatments may not provide the same level of commitment and effectiveness.

For expatriates and individuals living abroad, online therapy has become an increasingly popular choice. It offers a valuable solution to accessing mental health support regardless of geographical location, making it highly convenient and accessible for those in multicultural and international settings.

benefits of online therapy

Online therapy brings numerous benefits to individuals seeking mental health support. Firstly, it offers enhanced accessibility compared to traditional in-person therapy. Whether you live abroad, travel frequently, have a busy schedule, or have specific preferences for a therapist’s expertise, it allows you to easily connect with a suitable professional regardless of geographical limitations.

In addition, it promotes higher treatment adherence. The convenience of attending therapy sessions from the comfort of your own home, the flexibility to schedule appointments that align with your needs, and the added sense of anonymity and privacy contribute to a greater likelihood of staying engaged in the therapeutic process.

Furthermore, e-therapy provides increased scheduling flexibility. With online sessions, you can arrange appointments outside of traditional office hours, accommodating your unique circumstances and ensuring therapy fits seamlessly into your life.

Finally, online therapy is enticing for individuals who may have been hesitant to seek in-person therapy due to stigma or concerns about privacy. The privacy, approachability, and comfort of online platforms encourage a higher rate of treatment initiation and completion, empowering individuals to prioritize their mental well-being.

Furthermore, online therapy can also be more affordable. Read more about it here: Affordable Online Therapy: Tips & Insights

In-person therapy has its drawbacks

While in-person therapy has its merits, it also has disadvantages compared to online psychotherapy and counseling. Notably, in-person therapy is less flexible and convenient for scheduling appointments, and it’s often more expensive as therapists need to compensate for the cost of an office.

From a personal perspective, I had been offering online sessions to patients as needed, for example when they had business trips or when they changed countries and wanted to pursue their therapy.

That experience made it easy to transition in 2020, from traditional in-person therapy to exclusively practicing online therapy. This decision was motivated by the increased flexibility it offers for both my patients and myself.  Seeing how effective it is, I only see benefits for my patients.

Online therapy vs in-person sessions

Online therapy, or e-therapy, provides several distinct advantages compared to in-person therapy:

  1. Accessibility and Convenience: It offers greater accessibility to mental health support, regardless of your location. Whether you’re traveling, living, are an expatriate, or have a busy schedule, you can still access quality care. With online therapy, you can schedule appointments at a time that suits you, eliminating the need to travel to a physical office.
  2. Quick Availability: It provides the advantage of quick availability. With clinics like Psychology Experts, you can book your appointment for the next day through a convenient scheduling page. This allows you to receive the support you need promptly, without the potential waiting times associated with in-person therapy.
  3. Privacy and Anonymity: It presents a higher level of privacy and anonymity, which can be particularly beneficial for individuals who may feel nervous or uncomfortable in traditional office settings. Engaging in psychotherapy or counseling from the comfort of your own space allows you to maintain a sense of confidentiality, ensuring that your personal information remains secure.

By embracing online therapy, you can overcome barriers of location, time constraints, and privacy concerns, allowing for a more accessible and convenient therapeutic experience.

Online Therapy – Takeaway

In my own practice, I have witnessed the effectiveness and positive impact of online therapy. It provides a flexible, accessible, and confidential space for you to receive quality care and work toward your mental well-being. With the growing acceptance and availability of online therapy, it is indeed a legitimate and valuable option for individuals seeking mental health support.
